9-foods-to-never-feed-your-kids

Give2Kids (American Children’s Cancer Association) is doing our best to get the word out about how the food and drink our children consume, the air they breath, the skin products they use (shampoos, soap, etc.) and everything else that goes in, or on them, strongly determines their overall health, and protection against, or vulnerability to,
environmentally influenced disease conditions such as cancer and
other serious disorders.

Here are the top nine foods your children (or you) should never eat:

1. Microwave Popcorn

I’ve placed this at the top of the list, as microwave popcorn is one of the worst health offenders (with the exception of this this one).

Microwave popcorn bags are lined with PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid), which leaches into the popcorn when heated. Blood tests have shown that PFOA contaminate the blood; they can disrupt the endocrine system, which negatively affect sex hormones. The EPA has ruled PFCs as “likely carcinogens,” and has stated that PFOA “poses developmental and reproductive risks to humans.” More info.

Some PFCs have also been associated with other health dangers, such as:

- Infertility
- Thyroid disease
- Cancer
- Immune system problems
- Increased LDL cholesterol levels

2. Processed Meats (Hot Dogs, Bologna, etc.)

Meats you’ll find in your local deli typically are made from animals injected with antibiotics, growth hormones, and other drugs to artificially
fatten them up, keep them disease free and more profitable. These same meats usually also contain other chemicals (such as sodium nitrite) and artificial flavorings and dyes. All processed meats should be completely avoided because they raise your child’s risk of cancer. There is NO safe amount of processed meat. Please look instead for local providers of fresh organic, grass-fed or pastured beef, chicken, etc, and/or salmon,
which are all much healthier options. Please note: if your budget allows, it is best to buy wild caught salmon (as opposed to farm raised). Here is more information to help you make a determination.

3. Margarine

Margarine and other fake butters are unhealthy for children in many ways. They contain trans fats (which is very bad for the heart), free radicals (which can be toxic to cells), emulsifiers and artificial preservatives, and toxic solvents such as hexane. Raw milk butter, when made from grass-fed cows, is rich in beneficial conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which is known to help fight cancer and diabetes.

4. Vegetable Oils

Many parents are not aware that vegetables oils (such as soy, corn, canola) create oxidized cholesterol in children’s arteries, which increases their risk for coronary artery disease as they grow older.

The healthiest oil to cook with is organic coconut oil, because it’s a healthy saturated fat which withstands the heat of cooking, without becoming chemically altered. For more information, please click here.

5. Tomato Sauce in the Can.

BPA is a toxic chemical linked to reproductive abnormalities, neurological effects, heightened risk of breast and prostate cancers, diabetes,
heart disease and more. To avoid this hazardous chemical, avoid canned foods entirely and stick to fresh fruits and vegetables, or switch over to brands that use glass containers instead—especially for acidic foods like tomatoes.

The plastic lining of cans contain BPA, which is a toxic chemical linked to brain disorders, higher risk of breast and prostate cancers, reproductive aberrations, heart disorders, diabetes and more. Acidic foods, such as tomatoes, are more likely to leach the BPA into the
food. Make sure, instead, to always use fresh fruit and vegetables, and/or only buy food in glass containers.

6. The Following Non-Organic Fruits and Vegetables…

It is especially important that the following fruits and vegetables only be consumed when organic, as have been found to be the most heavily sprayed with pesticides (these are the “top” 15 most sprayed. The see the rest of the list, please click here):

http://www.ewg.org/foodnews/list.php

Apples
Celery
Cherry tomatoes
Cucumbers
Grapes
Hot peppers
Nectarines (imported)
Peaches
Potatoes
Spinach
Strawberries
Sweet bell peppers
Kale
Collard greens
Summer squash

7. Regular Table Salt

As most of us know, we must consume salt — it is essential for life. But what is not generally known is that table sale (and the salt found in processed foods) is not healthy.

Processed salt is mostly (98%) sodium chloride, the rest being made up of man-made chemicals. These include ferrocyanide and aluminosilicate,  neither of which are good for you or your children.

Far superior is unrefined salt, the best being Himalayan salt. It is pure, and not polluted with industrial toxins and heavy metals.

8. Unfermented Soy Products (Soy Protein Isolate)

Parents have been mislead for years about the “benefits” of soy. Unfortunately, soy as it is consumed in processed foods is far from healthy.

95% of American grown soybeans are genetically modified, and sprayed with the toxic pesticide glyphosate, exposure to which can lead to miscarriage and birth defects.

Fermented soy (tofu, tempeh, etc.) can be far healthier — but read the label to make sure it is not processed.

Here is just one of thousands of studies, which, combined, show consuming unfermented soy can lead to to digestive distress, malnutrition,
thyroid illness, immune-system disruption, reproductive/sex hormone disorders , cognitive decline, and infertility — as well as cancer and heart
disease.

9. Artificial Sweeteners

Regular refined sugar is bad enough for kids. but artificial sweeteners, such as Aspartame, can be as bad, or worse.

Studies have demonstrated how aspartame and saccharin cause higher weight gain than table sugar.

The body converts aspartame into formaldehyde, which is toxic to DNA and sensitive proteins.

Here are the top healthy commercially produced snacks we have found that are fantastic replacements for far less healthier snacks. Most of these are available at Whole Foods, independent health food stores, and high-end supermarkets, such as Wegmans. If your local provider doesn’t carry these brands, ask them to — or you can find out more how to order each of the websites below:

1. A MUCH Safer Microwave Popcorn

Healthy Microwave Popcorn

I have placed this at the top of the list, because there are still parents
who aren’t aware of how toxic the chemicals in common microwave products
can be. Please see The Cancer Risk of Microwave Popcorn, and this CDC.gov article, about the dangers of butter flavorings (such as the chemical Diacetyl) and how they are toxic to lungs.

Great news, though: There is a microwave popcorn that doesn’t contain any of the above chemicals: Quinn Popcorn and comes in some tasty flavors.

2. Corn Chips Done Right

Healthy Chips for Kids

Most of the corn chips you see in the supermarkets has Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) corn in it (unless they say “non-GMO”on the package). However, this brand,
Way Better Snacks, is non-GMO, and has organic, sprouted whole grains, seeds, quinoa,
sunflower oil, and other healthy, wholesome ingredients. And as a bonus: they taste great (I buy them all the time).

3. Avoid Dead Bread, Choose Live Sprouted Bread, Instead!

ezekialraisin

Commercially available bread, crackers, and other grain-based foodstuffs that fill the shelves of supermarkets and served in eating establishments, are downright unhealthy. They’re chock-full of non-food ingredients, (such as azodicarbonamide — the exact same chemical in shoe rubber and yoga mats), and many other ingredients that just shouldn’t be there (including GMOs, and treatment by chemical bleach). Also, much of the flour’s nutrients are eliminated by industrial processing.

A real bread that I’ve eaten and enjoyed for years is Ezekiel 4:9 Sprouted Grain Bread – it has NO flour in it, but is made of it’s made sprouted grains (up to six of them)! This combination of sprouted grains makes up a complete protein (all nine essential amino acids). Among the varieties of Ezekial Bread, kids will love the “Cinnamon Raisin” as a toast, especially with some organic butter and a little raw honey, or fruit jam, spread on
it. It also makes a great natural peanut butter sandwich. Please note that they offer a gluten-free bread as well.

4. Crunchy, Chewy and Allergy-Free

Healthy Snack Bars for Kids

Here’s a great snack for kids with dairy, gluten or tree nut allergies/issues:
SunButter Crunch Bars, by Enjoy Life.
They are free of gluten, tree nuts, lactose, soy and casein. You should know ahead of time that because of an occasional chlorophyll reaction in the sun flower seeds, the inside of the bar may look somewhat green. If so, there is no reason for concern, as it is harmless (see the FAQ section at their website).

5. These Chips are Stacked in Your Favor (and Flavor)…

POPCHIPS

Most kids love crunchy salty snacks, such as potato chips. But health-conscious parents know that such snacks are usually less than healthy, as they use highly heated, often unhealthy oils. Not so with PopChips. They use a unique “popping” process, that does not involve oil. Nor do they have preservatives in them — which is great — but if you have any leftover chips, make sure to seal bag tightly.

It IS Possible to Feed Your Children the BEST Foods, on a Budget!

Imagine how great it would be if you never ingested, inhaled or slathered anything toxic in or on your body? No pollution, fluoride, trans-fats, artificial dyes, gmo foods, etc. etc.? Never smoked, excessively drank, or did anything else that insulted your body? Consider for a moment how wonderful it would be if your body was clean and toxin-free?

Whether your children are currently healthy, or struggling with an illness, it’s never too late to begin making certain everything they consume, have applied or wear, are as pure and natural as possible… so they can enjoy much of the above toxin-free kind of life.

The earlier you start your child on a diet of natural, organic, non-processed, non-sugary foods, the sooner they will adapt to them. If they are already hooked on Fruit Loops and the like, you can gradually wean them off such artificial “foods”, and slowly introduce far superior, nutrient-rich foods.

This will not only keep them healthy (by strengthening their immune systems, etc.) it will also assist their bodies in the healing of any health challenges.

Affording Good Food

There are many among us today who are struggling with a corrupted economy, and may feel
that buying healthy, organic food too expensive.

Here are some tips:

Not all healthy food HAS to be organic. Some plants (such as broccoli) have a natural
plant covering on them, that protects its florets and stems from pesticides.

In addition to broccoli, here are some other great fruits and vegetables you don’t have to buy as organic:

onions
avocados
sweet corn (non-gmo)
pineapples
mango
sweet peas
asparagus
kiwi fruit
cabbage
eggplant
cantaloupe
watermelon
grapefruit
sweet potatoes
sweet onions

For more information on the above, PLUS the foods you MUST buy as organic, please click here.

To find the best prices for organic foods, please check around in your community for
regional markets, and ask the purveyors if there produce is organic (they will usually have signs that
already say “Organic”). There are also usually farm co-op buying groups, that you can buy
organic produce for less. For information on farms in your area that offer the above, please click here: http://www.localharvest.org/

And finally, if you give your children milk: please consider whole pasteurized goat milk, as opposed to cow’s milk. It generaly is digested much better. There is also nut and other alternative “milks” (such as almond, rice and coconut) that your children may like. But please consider only buying the non- sweetened varieties, and if necessary for taste, adding Stevia as a natural, safe sweetener, to them.

Best of success with your pursuit of a safe, natural and very healthy lifestyle, from the American Children’s Cancer Association! Through the funds we receive from Car Donation NY and Ca Donation NJ (and all other states), we help kids with cancer (and their families) determine the best treatment options, and pay for them.
